Adderall is a stimulant used to treat children and adults for a
condition called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
It helps remove the symptoms like having a short attention span
and being hyperactive and impulsive. It stimulates the central nervous
system by increasing the amount of certain chemicals in the body.
It is a mixture of four different amphetamine salts and was first
developed about 20 years ago and marketed under the name Obetrol
for weight loss and diet control.
Adderall is effective for most patients when taken once or twice a day. This
makes it convenient for patients, parents and caregivers. Adderall may help
some patients for whom other medications, such as Ritalin have not been effective.
The effects of Adderall can be felt after a few doses. It may take additional
time to achieve the full effect and this may require adjusting dosages. Most
people can achieve maximum benefit in 3 to 4 weeks.
Adderall has been shown to have very serious side effects and also
become habit forming. Reports link Adderall to 20 sudden deaths
worldwide so Canadian officials have taken the children's hyperactivity
drug off the market. U.S. officials say there is no evidence that
Adderall causes a greater risk for sudden death and have not initiated
a similar ban. While health officials continue to study the case,
parents are left to decide for themselves whether it's really safe
to let kids keep taking the drug. As far as prolonged use, drug
dependence may occur including withdrawal symptoms after stopping
the drug Adderall.
