Twenty cases of Sudden Unexplained Death in Adderall patients; 12
died of strokes. On February 9, 2005, Health Canada announced that
it instructed the manufacturer of Adderall to withdraw the drug
from the Canadian market. This action was based on safety information
concerning the association of sudden deaths, heart-related deaths,
and strokes in children and adults taking usual recommended doses
of Adderall.
Adderall is an amphetamine-based stimulant that is used in children and adults
who suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit
with Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADD and ADHD cause children
and adults to have problems focusing in a learning environment,
even though they usually have average to above average IQs.
Health Canada's decision comes as a result of a thorough review of safety information
provided by the manufacturer, which indicated there were 20 reports
of sudden death in patients taking either Adderall or Adderall XR.
These deaths were not associated with overdose, misuse or abuse.
Fourteen deaths occurred in children, and six deaths in adults.
There were 12 reports of stroke, two of which occurred in children.
It was announced in August of 2005 that Adderall would return to the Canadian
market for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
The Canadian Product Monograph will be revised to include warnings about the
misuse of Adderall and that Adderall generally should not be used in patients
with structural cardiac abnormalities.
At this time in the United States, the FDA does not feel that any immediate
changes are warranted for Adderall labeling or Adderall warnings. However on
February 8, 2006, the FDA unveiled a possible link between Adderall and the
occurrence of heart attacks, high blood pressure and sudden death.
